Army denies molesting Ogoni women

The Nigerian Army has dismissed claims in some online media that soldiers recently deployed in Ogoni molested women in the area.

The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army described the publication as malicious, false and a failed attempt by some cult members and other criminals to raise unnecessary alarm.

The Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, said the allegation was aimed at orchestrating withdrawal of the soldiers who were preventing hoodlums from committing crimes.

Iliyasu explained in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Saturday that the activities of the troops had helped in restoring peace to the town.

The statement noted that due to the incessant cult killings in Ogoni, a stakeholders’ meeting was convened on March 6, which had in attendance, paramount rulers and security agencies.

It added that part of the resolution by the community leaders was the restriction of movement between 7pm to 6am.

The army pointed out that the time for movement restriction coincided with the period when cult groups usually commit crimes.

Warning enemies of Ogoni people to change their ways or face the wrath of the law, the Army urged the people of the area to go about their businesses without fear of molestation.
